For years I trawled through magazines, websites, books and YouTube videos looking for that “ONE” diet, food or trick that was the answer to my lack of results. I’d look at these athletes on the front of the magazine or scroll Instagram frustrated that my progress seemed to be so slow.
That there must be a faster way to move towards my goals!
As humans, you and I tend to do this sort of thing a lot.
To seek out shortcuts. I’m not calling you out, I’m just saying that we are almost subconsciously hardwired to want maximal pleasure at minimal cost.
That’s why these 10 minute FAT BLASTING workouts or Vibration platforms, that you stand on while watching TV, seem attractive to some people, because opposed to an hour long, chest pounding, heavy lifting workout, they seem relatively easy.
WE WANT TO BELIEVE THERE IS AN EASIER WAY. Some supplement or secret that we haven’t discovered yet. Because the opposite is prolonged hard work.
That’s where marketing sucks us in every time! I mean who doesn’t want six-pack abs in 3 minutes a day? Or to drink tea for a week and lose 5 kg of fat! Or a supplement that increases our metabolism so we’re a “fat burning” machine all day!
Here’s the problem…
None of these work in the long term. None.
They are all “band-aid” solutions trying to cover a larger problem.
The solution?
Letting go of the ‘shortcut mentality’. Forget about the “one secret" your missing because it doesn't exist. Think long term.
The sooner you make long term sustainability, habit development and enjoyment your focus the quicker you’ll be ahead of the game. Not only this but you’ll no longer be as susceptible to the marketing messages promising you “quick” results.
You’ll understand that if it sounds too good to be true, 99% of the time it is. Nothing comes without a price. But that price can either lead to an improved and more educated you, or a poorer, more frustrated version of you.
Instead of buying that two week “tea-tox” for weight loss and toxin removal it may mean you have to work on your organisation skills and planning your food. Learning what you’re energy needs are and what foods should make up that energy.
While it may cost you time and mental resources initially it creates freedom down the line. It can free you from the anxiety and stress of not knowing what to eat when you’ve had a long day at the office and find yourself standing in the ice cream section of the supermarket and best of all teaches you valuable skills for life.
Not convinced?
Ask yourself “when has ‘seeking the easy way’ worked for you in the long run?” 6 months after that 8 week challenge or meal plan finishes have you actually improved? Are you more knowledgable? Do you have a better understanding or your body and how it responds to a given stimulus?
Or are you back to where you were prior to the challenge?
Think about how searching for the “quick” solution has derailed your progress in the past.
It’s time to forget the short cuts, quick tips, weird tricks and 10 minute solutions and get obsessed with consistency in the day to day actions. Focusing on the daily behaviours that will lead to the long term goals.
Develop these habits, behaviours and skills. With time working towards your goals becomes second nature.
